Apologies And My New Nail Shelf

Greetings Readers, (if i have any left)

I will start this post off with a big fat apology. For anyone out there who does read this (not being self deprecating, but my blog is new and not very well posted or advertised) I have been away. I blame this on a new job, a new house and a two month stay with my parents where there is little or no internet.

So I am very sorry. I am however back now and I am keen to try and keep this updated as much as I can. I have done a few designs while I have been away so I will pull a few of those out of the bag to schedule and get things on a roll.

So let me show you something that was a complete accident and has brought me great delight.

As I mentioned I have moved; Again. However we do plan on this being our home for quite a while. So whilst moving I realised we didn't have a bookshelf. A massive problem for me as I love my books not so much for The Boy as it turns out he owns all of 3 books. Anyways I saw a lovely quirky shelf in B&Q which I decided I would buy and build and it could hold my books. This was a lesson in buying from hardware stores for me as I should have read the measurements on the packaging as I would have realised that this was in no way, shape or form going to be any good as a bookshelf. Now I was very upset with myself for this having only really noticed once I had built it, duh! But The Boy being the wonderful man that he is pointed out that it didn't matter as I now had a perfect shelf for my nail varnishes, which he would not object to being displayed in our living room. Yay!

So I present you with my nail varnish area. Its quite simple and needs some major touch ups but my shelf has brought me great joy as I now don't have to rifle through a small box to find things I need :D big smiles from me.

I divided them into sections, its made it much easier to pick out exactly what I want straight away.

So first we have my silver/black/white section. I don't have a massive collection so some colours are bunched together.
Then we have the greens. They got a shelf all of their own.

And here are my glitters. They're in a little pod all of their own and they look so shiny :)

 Then I have my nudes/browns/oranges.
Then my beautiful pink and red section.
My special effects also got a pod all of their own as well. As you can see i'm a big Barry M fan.
Then this shelf houses my blues. Next to them my nail art paints and then my selection of base and top coats.
And my crowning glory's are my Etsy purchases. I love them. Also far left is my very own franken, its a beautiful blue shade but the glitters keep sinking. I will give that its own post soon.

So there is my new shelf. I'm so happy with it I've shown anyone who has asked about my new house!

See you soon xxx

Frog Nails

As promised here is my first step by step design post.
I saw lots of frogs while i was in Australia so i decided to do a frog inspired design. I watched loads of frog tutorials and decided to do my own take on it and mixed them all together. I am really happy with how it turned out. Except for the flies, i think the background should have been a darker colour so you can see the wings more. Anyways, here is the design and below is how i did it.

So the designs are as follows;
Thumb - Flies
Index Finger - Lily Pad
Middle Finger - Reeds
Ring Finger - Frog Eating a Fly
Pinky Finger - Green Leopard Print

Here are the polishes i used.
From Top to Bottom Left to Right
Barry M Matt White 66, Barry M Black 47, Barry M Mint Green 304, Barry M Spring green 290, Rimmel London Green Grass 260, Barry M Blueberry Ice Cream 306, Save The Nail 45 Second Top Coat (Which I am very very happy with, possibly not 45 seconds but dries nice and hard which is what i wanted) Barry M Neon Pink NP, Collection 2000 Hot Looks Hip Hop 28, Rimmel London Sunshine 280, Barry M Limited Edition Silver Glitter 149, Save The Nail Eau So Hydrating.

I also used an eyeliner brush i bought today for detailing as i don't have any stripe brushes or dotting tools yet.

I used my Eau so hydrating as a base coat and it has worked really well.

I started with the Frog on my ring finger.
Firstly i used Sunshine and painted my entire nail. I needed 3 coats to make this as opaque as i wanted.

Then i used my spring green to create a frog shape. I did a half circle at the bottom and then used the base of the brush to make 2 dos for eyes.

Unfortunately i forgot to take a photo of just the white spots for eyes but i used the white and put two dots inside the green ones for the whites of the eyes. Then i used black to create eye dots, a mouth and a fly body. Then added 2 more white dots for wings. I also used Mint green at the corners of the mouth for cheek spots but the polish is not very opaque so you cant actually see these at all.

I used my neon pink to make a tongue connecting the fly to the mouth. Layer of top coat and that's Mr frog done.

Next was my middle finger which was my rushes. I used blueberry ice cream and did a french tip to create the water.

I then added three lines for the rushes using the green grass.

I added shadow with the spring green.

To make a brown for the tip of my rush (i don't have any brown polish yet) I just mixed my hip hop with a small amount of black and it went a really good brown shade. I just used the eyeliner brush to dot that on.

I decided to use my silver glitter to add some shimmer to the water so just painted that straight over the blue. Then top coat to seal it in.

Next was my lily pad on my index finger. I painted the whole nail with blueberry ice cream. 2 coats to make it as opaque as i wanted, could probably have got away with one.

I then used my spring green to draw a pacman shape on my nail. Apologies for the blurred image.

I then outlined this and did some details with the black. Top coat finished this one. This looks like the simplest design but t was really hard to do the outline as my brush is not really great for very fine lnes. Practice makes perfect so i hope i get better at fine lines.

Next was my pinky finger leopard print. I did the whole nail in green grass.

I then did random splodges of spring green.

I did little outline spots with the black. I have never done leopard print before and i am really pleased with how this turned out for my first try. Top coat on and this was done too. Again apologies for the blurred pic.

Finally was my flies on my thumb. Definitely need to rethink the background of this one. I might re-do it with pink or orange background, i will post if i decide to do this. However i used mint green and pained the whole nail.

I added some black spots for the bodies of the flies.

Finally i decided to do grey wings instead of white so mixed my white and black as i don't yet have a grey either. Dabbed 2 sots on each black spot. Top coat on and that's my first original design finished.

So that was my first design that actually had pictures instead of just patters and i am really pleased with it. More to come soon. :)

Nail Care Issues

So, even though i love painting my nails, i don't actually take very good care of them. Today I decided that this was going to change.
I have a slightly tight varnish budget at the moment so i have not splashed out in hopes that what i have bought is going to do the job for me.

Firstly i decided to get myself some hand cream, soften up my cuticles and as i work in a warehouse by day it will do my hands good too. As i said small budget so i actually got Wilkinson's own Cocoa Butter Nail and Hand Cream. After 2 applications of a small amount my hands are already feeling much better.

Secondly i have been having a few issues with my usual base/top coat. I have been using Barry M Basecoat, Topcoat and Nail hardener all in one. There are 2 issues i have with this, 1) It is not protecting my nails from staining from the varnishes i have been using and 2) It never dries totally hard. The second issue is quite a big one as i have been spending time on designs and applying this as a topcoat only fr it to not protect my design at all and have smudged or moved within the hour. With this in mind i had a look round boots and settled on 2 separate items. (I think putting my faith in an all rounder may have been my mistake.)
I have purchased 2 Save The Nail Products b y Nails Inc;

Eau So Hydrating Basecoat

45 Second Topcoat

The basecoat is wonderful and dries really quickly. I will be using the topcoat on my next design. A post on this design will follow shortly and i will let you guys know my thoughts on it in that post.

So there you go. I now have a small nail care routine.

A Simple Start

So here is my first post.
This is Barry M Instant Nail Effects Purple Rain (#322) over Collection 2000 Hot Looks 28 Hip Hop. Fairly simple one of base oat, followed by the orange then the nail efects on top. Finish off with a topcoat and job done.
The Nail Effects did the hard work for me today.

Easy one this time. :)
